Cameron, along with his dad and two sisters, decided a few months ago to run the Layton Half Marathon. With Cameron training for the Las Vegas Ragnar with my family, it seemed like good timing to train for the half as well.
Cam suffered a few set backs with a pulled muscle as well as some knee and shoe problems, but he pushed through and the race came and he was excited - although he didn't quite think he was as ready as he would like to have been.
Since we live in Utah and the weather decides to do what it wants, Cam went from training in the heat of the day (high 80's) for weeks to running on race day in cold temps (low 40's). We made sure he had what he needed to stay warm and hoped that it wouldn't hinder him too much, which I don't think it did.
I was SO excited to see Cam cross the finish line, I love the finish line of races and I knew how much Cam had put into this and was anxious to see him and cheer him on to the finish. The Clark's all came out to show their support for the whole gang as we waited in the cold.
With the race delayed and Cam being unsure of what pace he would be able to keep, I hoped for the best for him and arrived early - which was a good thing. He kept his pace and finished right about when I thought he would. I was so proud of him and he was happy with his time - I'd say it was pretty good for his first half. He finished in 1:46:32 and 6th in his age group.
We waited for the rest of the runners who were all very happy to see the finish line - we were so proud of all them who pushed through everything to finish.
I know most runners are hitting their breaking point as they near the finish and I loved getting to help cheer them on - sometimes it's enough to bring you to tears to watch some of the runners.
Next up for Cam is Ragnar which we are both looking forward to - I think Cam has the racing bug and is already looking for more races to run. I love seeing him get excited and train and me getting to be a part of the build up and excitement of the race. It's awesome to see him work towards such a hard goal and do so well.
WAY TO GO CAM!
I'm so proud of you.
